I’ve had many jobs in my career. Some line level. Others management. I have expereineced as well as have been advised to take advantage of those who make their purpose pleasing others.

Ever consider wrting a how to book on how to find and pick those successful people? I hate to say it, but there are tons of folks who aspire to better and simply don’t have the inborn talent to pull it all together. It is very difficult to find quality people who are open to a normal relationship and yet willing to mentor.

Then it occurred to me that my 1 year old was the one that left the puddle. We immediately left the store.

Don’t take offense to the term…you’re reading into it too much. It sounds like you need to find a new place to work though. Eagles don’t hang out with buzzards and if you’ve got managers laughing at you about stuff like that it’s time to fly the coop baby.

I recently heard a statistic that said you will earn within 10% of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Surround yourself with successful people and learn from them and don’t waste time with the sheep and buzzards in life.

I wasn’t sure what to make of the comment. The term bench warmer caught me off guard and frankly seemed initially condescending. Is the term use something learned in a motivational seminar meaning to self sabotage?

The reason the comment caught my attention is I too have marveled at the same “phenomenon” only from the bench warmer side of the equation. It’s frustrating when you are overlooked and your efforts to self promote cause more harm that good. You emulate those who you believe are sucessful only to see their reward while you stagnate. You strive to do well, work hard, step up to the task and still come up short. Sometimes you’re seen as the fool who can always be relied on to do something when no one else will. I actually overheard a group of managers laughingly describe me in that manner. It wasn’t seen as initiative. It was seen as the fool stupid enough to do it. Painful to say the least. And and when you hold back to work on the project that could be meaningful, then suddenly you no longer have “that winning attitude.”

So, any insights for learning the communication tools that will work?

I think that there are many competent and well qualified people in life who are constantly limited by lacking the ability to clearly communicate to the right people what they know and are capable of.

Those who tend to rise to the top not only only have their stuff together but are also able to communicate it in a way that is professional, concise and engaging.
